About This Internet Speed Test

Net Speed Tests provides a free, accurate internet speed test that measures your real-world connection performance. Unlike simulated or synthetic tests, we transfer actual data to and from Cloudflare's global edge network — spanning 300+ cities across 100+ countries — to give you precise, real-world measurements of your broadband or mobile connection.

Our internet speed test online measures five critical metrics that define your digital experience: download speed (how fast you receive data from the internet), upload speed (how fast you send data to the internet), ping/latency (round-trip response time in milliseconds), jitter (variation in latency over time), and packet loss (percentage of data packets that never arrive). Together, these metrics determine whether your connection can handle 4K streaming, competitive online gaming, HD video conferencing, large file transfers, and everyday browsing without frustration.

The test runs entirely in your browser using standard web APIs — no app download, no browser extension, no signup, and no personal data collected. It works on desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux) and mobile (iOS Safari, Chrome Android) across WiFi, Ethernet, and cellular networks including 4G LTE and 5G NR. Results include your public IP address, internet service provider (ISP), approximate geographic location via IP geolocation, and IPv6 connectivity status.

We use Cloudflare's speed measurement infrastructure (speed.cloudflare.com) with multi-size test files ranging from 100 KB to 25 MB for downloads and 100 KB to 10 MB for uploads. Latency is measured using 10 HEAD requests with a trimmed mean calculation (discarding outliers) for accuracy. Jitter follows RFC 5481 (mean absolute deviation from the mean). Packet loss is tested with 20 lightweight requests. The final reported speeds use the 90th percentile of successful test runs, filtering out momentary dips caused by browser scheduling or network variance.

Browser-based speed test limitations: All browser-based tests — including ours — have inherent constraints. Results reflect the path between your device and our test server, not necessarily end-to-end performance to every destination. WiFi adds variability from signal strength, channel interference, and distance from the router. Browser single-threaded JavaScript execution and TCP flow control can cap measured speeds on very fast connections (1 Gbps+). For the most accurate baseline, connect via Ethernet, close background applications, and run the test 2–3 times at different hours.

Whether you need to check internet speed for troubleshooting, verify your ISP's promised speeds against what you're actually getting, optimize your connection for internet speed test for gaming with low ping and jitter, or validate your wifi speed test performance across different rooms, our tool delivers reliable, real-world results instantly. The client history log feature (stored locally in your browser) lets you track performance over time and identify patterns.

How to Get Accurate Internet Speed Test Results

Follow these steps before running a free internet speed test to ensure the most accurate measurements of your connection.

1

Use Ethernet for Best Accuracy

Connect directly to your router via Ethernet cable. WiFi adds variability from signal strength, interference, and distance. For the most reliable net speed test, wired is best.

2

Close Background Apps

Pause downloads, streaming, cloud backups, and video calls. Other network activity skews download speed test and upload speed test results lower.

3

Test Multiple Times

Run the online speed test 2–3 times at different hours. Speeds fluctuate with network congestion (peak evening hours are typically slower).

4

Compare to Your Plan

Check your ISP's advertised speeds. Wired results should reach 80–95% of your plan. If consistently lower, contact your provider with your test data.

Understanding Your Internet Speed Test Results

Each metric in your net speed test reveals different aspects of your connection quality. Here's what they mean for your daily internet use.

⬇ Download Speed
Measures how fast data travels from the internet to your device. Affects streaming quality (Netflix, YouTube), file downloads, web page loading, and game updates. 25+ Mbps for 4K streaming; 100+ Mbps for multiple users. This is the primary metric most users check when they check internet speed.
⬆ Upload Speed
Measures how fast data travels from your device to the internet. Critical for video calls (Zoom, Teams), cloud backups, live streaming, and online gaming. 10+ Mbps for HD video calls; 25+ Mbps for 4K streaming upload.
◎ Ping (Latency)
Time for a signal to travel to the server and back (milliseconds). Lower is better. Under 20ms excellent for gaming; 20–50ms good; 50–100ms noticeable delay; Over 100ms laggy experience. Critical for internet speed test for gaming scenarios.
∼ Jitter
Variation in ping over time. Consistent latency matters more than raw speed for real-time applications. Under 5ms stable; 5–15ms acceptable; Over 30ms causes choppy voice/video and gaming issues.
✗ Packet Loss
Percentage of data packets that never reach their destination. Even 1% loss degrades VoIP/video quality; over 5% makes connections unusable. Should be 0% on healthy connections.

Testing Basics

What is an internet speed test?

An internet speed test is a digital diagnostic tool that analyzes the performance, capacity, and quality of your broadband or mobile internet connection. It works by sending and receiving sample data packets between your device and a nearby high-speed test server.

A complete speed test evaluates five core metrics:

  • Download Speed: How fast your connection pulls data from the web (measured in Mbps). Crucial for streaming movies, browsing websites, and downloading files.
  • Upload Speed: How fast you send data to the internet (measured in Mbps). Vital for video calls (Zoom, Teams), live streaming, and cloud backups.
  • Ping / Latency: The round-trip time in milliseconds (ms) for data to reach the server and respond. Lower ping is essential for competitive gaming.
  • Jitter: The variation in latency over time. Low jitter ensures stable, uninterrupted voice and video calls.
  • Packet Loss: The percentage of data packets lost in transit. A healthy connection should have 0% packet loss.
